Hey – who remembers what an autostereogram is? \u00c2\u00a0Nope, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not another version of Instagram, haha. \u00c2\u00a0Actually, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a throwback to the 1990\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, and while you older folks may not have known the term, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure that you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve all seen and stared at one, many years ago. \u00c2\u00a0Back then, there was a fad that involved staring at a colorful picture filled with repeating patterns. \u00c2\u00a0These pictures resembled colorful psychedelic wallpaper, but if one stared at it long enough, one would be rewarded by a hidden three dimensional image that would appear. \u00c2\u00a0These were called autostereograms and were very popular with the public for a short period of time, then quickly lost their \u00e2\u20ac\u0153fifteen minutes of fame\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/div>\n

Our younger members probably don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know what an autostererogram is nor have ever seen one. \u00c2\u00a0For that reason, they may find the one below interesting. \u00c2\u00a0Unlike the usual autostereogram, this one doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t contain a hidden 3-D image. \u00c2\u00a0Instead, it contains a checkerboard pattern of leaping tigers. \u00c2\u00a0If looked at long enough, the tigers pop out into several rows of differing depths. \u00c2\u00a0I chose it because it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s easy to tell when the 3D effect takes place (no hidden image) and also because the tiger is the symbol of JKA Shotokan Karate-Do.<\/div>\n

Of course, if the 3D effect doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t happen for you, that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s okay, since not everyone can see it. \u00c2\u00a0Back when these were all the rage, I often reflected and compared the visual phenomenon to\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6Kata! Haha. \u00c2\u00a0You know, a basic pattern of movement that we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re supposed to memorize and endlessly perform as a part of our training. \u00c2\u00a0Like the autostereograms, if only viewed at a superficial level, one can only see the pattern. \u00c2\u00a0Yet, if one takes the time and opens one\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s eyes and mind, a deeper meaning gradually reveals itself.<\/div>\n
